Carefully Restoring a Historic Roof While Preserving Its Original Character
Project Overview
AM Roofing was appointed to refurbish the roof of a Grade II listed property in Ware, Hertfordshire. Believed to date back to the 1600s, the building required specialist roofing work that would preserve its historic appearance while improving the roof’s long-term performance.
The project involved carefully restoring the existing slate roof using reclaimed materials wherever possible, ensuring the finished roof remained in keeping with the property’s original character while benefiting from modern roofing techniques beneath the surface.
The Project
Working on listed buildings requires a careful balance between conservation and modern roofing standards. Every aspect of the refurbishment had to respect the property’s historic significance while ensuring the roof would continue to protect the building for many years to come.
To meet the conservation requirements, all visible roofing materials, including the reclaimed slates, ridge cappings, roof tiles and mortar finishes, were selected to match the original roof as closely as possible.
Our Solution
Our experienced roofing team carefully removed the existing roof covering before carrying out the necessary structural improvements beneath the surface.
While the external appearance remained faithful to the original design, we were able to incorporate modern roofing components, including new breathable underlay and treated battens, to improve the overall durability and weather resistance of the roof without altering its historic character.
Throughout the refurbishment, every stage of the work was completed with close attention to detail, ensuring the finished roof met both the conservation requirements and the high standards expected of a professionally installed roofing system.
The Result
The completed roof retains the traditional appearance of this beautiful 17th-century listed property while providing the benefits of modern roofing construction hidden beneath the reclaimed slate finish.
By combining traditional craftsmanship with carefully selected modern materials, we delivered a sympathetic roof refurbishment that helps preserve the building’s character while providing reliable protection for many years to come.
