Keeping rain and damp out of a building takes solid groundwork and a sensible eye for detail. When water manages to track inside, it rarely shows up where you think it started, and chasing those faults calls for people who spend every working day up on ladders.
AM Roofing handles the whole spectrum of work for properties around Sawbridgeworth, whether that means sorting out a cracked chimney cowl, patching older felt, or stripping an entire property back to bare timber for a fresh start. We get straight to the point, sort the issue properly, and leave things watertight.
WHAT WE DO
Roofers in Sawbridgeworth
Good roofers in Sawbridgeworth need to know their way around different eras of brickwork and timber. Plenty of homes along Bell Street or out towards Spellbrook have their own quirks, from historic roof pitches that have shifted slightly over time to newer estates where modern dry-fix systems are the norm. We do not turn up with high-pressure sales talk or try to talk you into work you do not actually need. We climb up, inspect the valleys, flashings, and ridge lines, take clear photos so you can see what is happening up there, and explain what will put it right.
Putting on new roofs in Sawbridgeworth is a major undertaking, so getting the preparation right is half the battle. We pull off the old slates or tiles, clear away years of accumulated grime, and look closely at the rafters to be certain the timbers remain completely sound. If any wood shows signs of wet rot, we sister or replace it on the spot. Over that, we fit a modern breathable underlay, set out treated counter-battens with the right gauge, and lay your chosen roof covering so the finished structure breathes properly without letting an ounce of driven rain sneak past.
Small snags turn into big bills when they get left through a wet autumn. Roof repairs in Sawbridgeworth make up a big portion of our week, especially after heavy frost cracks older porous tiles or high winds shake loose ridge mortar. Water running behind a fascia board or pooling in a valley usually takes a bit of patient tracking down. We look for the root cause instead of just smearing mastic over a hole, swapping broken units, re-bedding loose ridge stones, and sorting out cracked lead so your ceilings stay bone dry.
Traditional mineral felt had a bad habit of blistering under the summer sun, but modern systems have moved on leaps and bounds. We lay heavy-duty torch-on felts, seamless liquid plastics, and durable single-ply membranes that cope with standing puddles without breaking down. If your rear kitchen extension, garage, or garden studio has started dripping around the joins, we can strip the failed boards, sort the falls so rain runs straight into the gutter, and seal the whole surface for the long haul.
Every pitch has its own demands when it comes to tiling and slating. Low-pitch roofs need specific overlaps to stop capillary draw, while steeper pitches give you the chance to use natural Welsh or Spanish slate that can outlast the timbers underneath them. We work with interlocking concrete systems, handmade plain clay tiles that suit period cottages, and natural stone slates. The spacing has to be spot on so the lines run true from the eaves right up to the ridge.
Historic buildings need a completely different touch because standard modern methods can actually trap damp in antique timbers. We work on period properties and conservation projects where things like lime mortar pointing, genuine hand-crafted peg tiles, and code lead dressing are required by planning rules. It takes patience to salvage original materials wherever possible, sourcing matching reclaimed stock to blend any new sections in with the rest of the street.
A leaking roof on a commercial unit can halt trade, ruin stock, and cause major headaches for staff. We take on commercial roofing work across local shops, workshops, and communal residential blocks, working around business hours to keep noise and disruption to a minimum. Whether you need a metal sheet overclad, routine clearing and repair of box gutters, or a complete surface overhaul, we handle the access equipment, stick to current safety regulations, and get the job finished on schedule.
When gale-force weather brings a tree branch down through your roof or rips half the ridge line off in the middle of the night, you cannot afford to wait days for a look. We run an emergency roofing response across the area to make damaged properties safe as quickly as possible. That means boarding out, securing tough waterproof sheeting, and checking that the surrounding structure is stable before coming back in daylight with the right replacement parts to complete a permanent fix.
Your roof can be completely sound, but if the guttering is choked or the timber eaves are rotting, rainwater will still find its way into your exterior walls. We take down warped timber rooflines and fit solid uPVC fascias, ventilated soffit boards, and deep-flow gutter systems that carry heavy downpours cleanly away. It cuts out the need to climb ladders with a paintbrush every few summers, protects your rafter feet from rot, and leaves the whole perimeter looking clean.
